History of TAG Heuer Watches
Founded by a 20-year-old Edouard Heuer in Saint-Imier, the first TAG products developed in his workshop were silver pocket watches. Just nine years later, Heuer had his first patented design for a crown-operated keyless winding system.
His entrepreneurial spirit and instinctive innovation in watchmaking steered the brand to its next patent, which covered a push button to start and stop a chronograph instantly. The chronograph consequently became a popular timing instrument for sporting events across the world.
TAG delved into the world of medical timing in 1908, developing a colourful scale on the Sphygmometer pocket watch that physicians could use to accurately measure a patient’s heart rate.
As cars took over our roads and planes began to fill our skies, the first dashboard clock named “Time of Trip” was integrated into vehicles and aircraft. It cleverly displayed the time of day and duration of travel with two separate dials.
In 1914, the brand finally moved away from pocket watches and manufactured its maiden wrist chronograph. This is thought to have been one of the first such items on the market.
TAG Heuer was named as the official supplier of stopwatches for the 1920 Olympic Games thanks to its ongoing reputation for precision and performance. This catapulted the brand into the sporting success it is associated with to this day, supplying famous events such as the Indianapolis 500 and Formula One.
