The doors to Watches and Wonders 2022 will finally open this Wednesday, and it’s certain to be a week filled with exciting discoveries. We’re sitting down with our Executive Director, Craig Bolton, to hear his views on the return of the in-person event, his expectations for the week, and a few personal hopes of his from the fair…

Reflecting on previous watch fairs – what do they mean for the industry?

I have, and always will, love attending the watch fairs as it’s a pure privilege to work in an industry that celebrates excellence and newness on such a scale. I continue to be amazed, year on year, at how the brands celebrate their new releases, the continued evolution of our industry, and the spectacular showcase which we are witness to.

What have been your favourite moments from watch fairs over the last 5 years?

For me, seeing the developments from Tudor has been nothing short of fantastic. The arrival of the GMT and their use of bronze, silver, and gold metals has been a real highlight.

Last year we experienced a ‘digital only’ version of Watches and Wonders, this year it’ll be going ahead both virtually AND in-person. How do you feel about the fact that you’ll be able to attend this year and what are you anticipating?

Personally, I am incredibly excited. Whilst last year we experienced the newness virtually, which was fitting for the circumstance, in my opinion nothing surpasses the energy and thrill of being with our brand partners for the reveal of their newness. I will be at the fair and have a full dairy of appointments with our brand partners. There is nothing better than seeing the product first-hand, touching, and feeling it.

Are there any key trends that you think will emerge or continue at this year’s Watches & Wonders?

Following on from Rolex and Breitling’s trend last year of introducing more coloured dials to their collections, I think we will see more of this exciting trend this year. .

Who do you think will surprise us?

I have learnt to always expect the unexpected, and so I am just intrigued to see what the brands have to show us. One of the big questions is always “what are Rolex going to do?” and they never disappoint. I have spotted a Titanium Yacht-master worn by Ben Ainslie and I cannot help but wonder if this will become a production model. Elsewhere, MB&F and Speake-Marin are two exciting independent brands to watch, and I am really looking forward to seeing their new collections. .

What would you personally love to see?

For me, if Rolex were to bring to market at Titanium Yachtmaster, I would be first in the queue to purchase it. .
