A new year is the time to shake things up, start something fresh. And as new beginnings go, getting married is a pretty magical one, full of romance, promise, and a life shared with the one you love. The proposal’s happened, you have your eye on an outfit, and the venue is being discussed. The next thing on the list has to be jewellery. Not all of us are fortunate enough to have a treasure trove of ancestral jewels to choose from, which means having the wonderful pleasure of getting to select your wedding day parure yourself. With the help of Mappin & Webb, of course.

And the best place to start is with the earrings. While diamonds have previously had the engagement market cornered, modern brides are turning to this gemstone to brighten up the big day as well. Diamond earrings are incredibly flattering. The light refraction makes skin glow, they elongate the neck, and are designed to be noticed, whether on full view with an up-do, or seen as flirtatious flashes through long hair.

Mappin & Webb’s Amelia collection, which is named after the Amelia rose, symbol of beauty and love, showcases three different stone cuts for its earrings, all with halos in smaller diamonds to enhance the brilliance of the central stone. For brides with a more modernist bent, there’s the emerald cut, so called because it was originally used for emeralds. Because of the step cut, which creates a “hall of mirrors” effect, this stone doesn’t sparkle but flashes, creating a very dramatic first impression. For those who want all the attributes of a round-cut diamond – serious amounts of sparkle – but prefer something a little different there are oval-cut earrings, and for those who want to take a style tip from history there is the pear drop – a cut that has been around since 1450 and is still popular today thanks to brilliance that comes from combining a marquise with an oval. Each pair of earrings has a complementary halo pendant, which is suspended from an 18ct white gold chain by a stone-studded loop in the same metal. As single pieces they are gorgeous, when worn as a set, the effect is stunning.

If the question has been popped but the perfect ring not yet found, the Amelia collection also has a sensational selection of diamond engagement rings. There’s the option of pear and oval-cut halos with stone-set shoulders in platinum, or, if you want to go emerald all the way, there’s the showstopper featuring a trio of diamonds, surrounded by more diamonds on a platinum band set with even more diamonds. Dazzling doesn’t begin to describe it.

Everyone wants their wedding day to be perfect; and while you can’t control everything, you can be assured that, when it comes to jewellery for that special day and beyond, Mappin & Webb will be there to ensure you and your jewels look absolutely flawless.
